Hackney Town House
East London Victorian townhouse.
This large Victorian maisonette taking up the upper three floors of this end-of-terrace Victorian house right in the heart of vibrant Hackney had a complete renovation with a loft conversion.
A new layout meant an openplan entertainment space a kitchen with large concertina doors leading onto a roof terrace over looking the garden. Most of kitchen cabinets are sleek stainless steel mixed with the 150 year old roof beams which were reinvented to form parts of the kitchen. A contemporary concrete worktop and a raw wooden shelf with an antique mirror – all mixing new and old for a comfortable, functional and cosy space.
With the house being two separate apartments the complete first floor was soundproofed to eliminate noise between apartments. To suit the artist client only certain historical elements were kept like coving and ceiling roses but other elements were reimagined like the raw concrete lintel and base in the lounge by the fireplace.
As a maisonette and with the new loft conversion all doors had to be approved regulated fire doors which meant each doors was designed and made for the space. To go with the age of the house the doors have a very traditional look with elegant oak handles, however to give them a modern touch they were painted in a black blue high gloss.
In the bathroom an old butchers block form washstand for a minimalist concrete sink. The cast iron roll top bath finished with sleek polished chrome taps. Old slate slabs on heated floor with cement rendered walls.
An exposed brick wall that run up the complete house along the staircase gives this apartment a New Yorker feel really shows the size of this colourful and playful home.
